Aesthetic

Beginning to look at ways of laying out the book/brochure, I have looked at ways previous brochures have been layout in relationship to the new direction i visualise for my innovative take on these brochures.

In the previous post i was looking at layout that aesthetically captured me i like the overlapping of images to add interest but essentially i want the book to have clean lines and be simplistically beautiful to emulate the classic brochure in a new and exciting way.

-The Car Man- Mathew Bourne New Adventures Production-

  • About all the creatives involved with the creation of the production
  • Other Productions
  • 1 Page of Production Shots
  • Cast
  • Scenes
  • Cast profiles of Crewe & tour crewe
  • Cast Shots & Background
  • 1 Page Production Shots
  • Coming Soon
  • Advertisements
  • Theatre Information (Sadlers Wells)
Colour Theme is very important throughout the brochure as it pulls everything together and makes the information and page layouts coherent to one another. It also says something about the play itself they have chosen a red, orange, black and yellow colour platte these colours are dark and harsh in contrast mirroring the story itself, the red burnt orange tones emulate the sexuality of the production also.

This is something i need to consider when choosing my colour pallet is the message that its giving about the content published within the book, in relation to the narrative of the story, target audience but also an aesthetic that is interesting in a way too and captures the reader.

{ Colour }

I want to re visit my target audience at this point to remind myself of the audience that essentially this colour pallet is for, I feel this is an important part to think about previous to picking the colours as it needs to aline to the colours that the target audience of the book would aesthetically enjoy and be drawn to.

These is my initial evaluation of colour ideas when reading my previously set out Target Market from my Research & Development Project proposal.

- Depth in colour: Dusty greys, Hues of Tonal     colours.

- Bright Interesting: Bright Indian Influence (holds interest of the Reader profile the reader enjoys travel and new experiences but further this is part of the narrative of the original story)

Tonal Hues

Hues of a similar colour that create depth as a whole visual aesthetic. This is in relationship to my target market due to the other interests they have such as going to exhibitions being interested in art, and being educated will inform an appreciation to a tonal depth in a colour pallet.
Tones of colours i have chosen are dusty greys, tonal blues, raw beiges and mauves all taking from particular colour themes within the production photography as shown below.

 Pantone Pallet

Indian Bright & Interesting

Bright, Rich and full of life these colours are lifting and portray the explorer within  the target Market always wanting new and exciting experiences. The middle eastern colour reference also holds relation to the narrative of the story Sara & her farther moved from India back to the grey city of London. It also is a homage to the key theme within the play 'Burgeoning Sexuality' and the break away from the fairy tail, magic of childhood and into dull reality, the contrast in colour pallets could work as a comment to this main theme.

I want to chose colours that are similar to those used within the production imagery but are enhanced, exaggerated versions, such as the skin tonal oranges and beiges transferring into rich burnt oranges and similar with dusty greys and tonal blues into vibrant turquoise.

 Pantone Pallet

Taking rich, vibrant tones of the images above creating a Pantone pallet that explores the excitement of the magic within the narrative.

{ Colour Pallet Comparison}

I have put the two colour pallet's next to one another to see the contrast of colours and what colours work together. Also what colours would work within the book and in relation to the rest on the content. There are similar tones to the colours in the two pallet's there for feel that the colours work well together the salmon pink and pastel spectrums are complimentary while the brighter oranges contrast with the Burgundy purples. The two pallets compliment one another but feel i need to condense the amount of colours as not to overwhelm and keep it simplistic rather than cluttered.

{Final Colour Pallet}

I have combined the colours initially chosen into one coherent pallet apart from obviously black and whites i will reference to these Pantone colours when designing the book so i can create a coherent aesthetic. This pallet explores the dark and raw elements within the narrative of the play but further throws in interest to capture the reader and delivering a consuming and atmospheric feel to through out the book.

{ Typography }

I have been drawn towards hand painted feminine typography, the styles given an authentic and playful feel something that relates to the story well. This initial typography exploration will be for main titles and larger key wording as a decorative style could not be use for smaller text. I want the typography to be easy to read due to the Target Market there needs to be an element of intelligence to the aesthetic of the typography so remembering this is important!

I have selected these two differnt styles the first works well within the imagery and could be something to consider for title pages and or cover fonts. The second interested me as it was coherent with the Art work being produced for the cover page and could work well for statement titles adding texture and interest to pages.

{Da Font Experimenting}

'Olivier'- Looks very Disney not something i want to move towards, want to keep the font creative and original.
'Traverling Typewriter'

'A Little Girls Script'
'Sketch Handwriting'

'Impact Label'

'Bright young things'

'shorelines'
'Movus BrushPen'
I want it to look educated, playful, interesting drawing you into the story i have found during the font finding process that the word Princess can look very childish in the wrong font and stear away from this is difficult as my audience although playful are intelligent.

{ Final Fonts }

Started to play around with all the elements thus far together, using the colour pallet, imagery and typography. Here i have shown examples of the writing in white and a colour chosen from the pallet this way i can get a better idea of how the typography font style will wont with the context. I like this font i feel it hold a authentic vintage style thats classic but also playful with the elongated letters, I feel i need more opinions of the font style so have decided to conduct gather opinions from my Target Market to really find the font that appeals to them themselves.
