Set Design

https://uk.pinterest.com/milliejohns/set-design/
Set design I have realised through the test shooting process will be a key part to the images to set the location of were the scene is in relation to the narrative of the story but also to create more atmosphere and dynamic images than a plain black background as discovered in my first test shoot. All my previous test shoot i have been looking more at the models, makeup and hair rather than the setting (all will be shot on plain black background) I have began in creating an inspiration board on the kind of set designs that capture me initially and then from this will begin thinking how i can create something similar within my budget and mailability of getting/moving objects around.

As the setting of the story has adjusted to the modern day, I wanted to look at set design that is contemporary but using effective techniques to reference a place. Minimal use of furniture and lighting seam to be an overall coherent theme within this mood board and something i would like to experiment with.

From this i started looking around second hand website that sell and source furniture and an array of differnt things: gumtree, free sale, eBay and local charity shops for pieces that i knew i needed. As my budget is not large i have been trying to get things as cheap as possible below is a detailed breakdown of the scene set design and the objects that i have sourced ready for collection friday, 11th March.

Scene 1 . Miss Michin talking to Captain Crewe about the care of Sara, Sara hiding behind her Papa during the conversation .

. Girls stood at window looking in .

. Sara and her Papa saying goodbye, her sitting on his lap holding the lapels on his coat .

Scene 4 . Sara by herself in the outhouse, its grotty, mold , bruising as if she's just been hit .

. Becky running over to comfort her, hugging together .

Scene 6 . 'I am a Princess!' moment between Miss M and Sara is a delicate and powerful moment, not only does it show the depth of Sara as a character it shows Miss M's sensitivity and hurt for the first time showing that even a grown woman can wish after a child's mindset and dream world .

The lighting will be the key element that will set the scene similarly below i want to capture a candle lit feel, with playing with shadows to create vast spaces of negative and positive space in the composition.

Scene 7 ? . This scene has been decided going to be when Sara & her farther reunited and was heavily inspired from the film, were they used pathetic fallacy in creating the emotional atmosphere with rain. The use of this was very effective and something i would like to explore within my own work, using the cold blue tones instantly gives a sad uncomfortable atmosphere

After collection of the furniture I will be able to create a better understanding of were everything will sit in the compositions including the placement of the models. As I am shooting in the studios I am aware that there Is not much space Like usual stages would have so In creating a well though out composition I will need to make the Images look like they are in a Large theatre setting rather than the studio we will actually be shooting in.
