Captain Crewe

I have created an initial hair chart for the character of Captain Crewe, a deep middle parting wave, with shorter sides. For this shoot ill be experimenting with a prosthetic beard to age the character as when we test shot previously with the model he looked youthful but on reflection I feel he needs to be portrayed as slightly older in character in comparison to my other chosen models pictured the character a little older, ill be using dry shampoo with age the models natural hair.

{ Reflection of Test Shoot }

As this was the first time testing with adult models and with the wigs I was apprehensive about coming together at this later stage in the project. I had created three wigs for three characters although the model for Miss Minchin was unable on the day of shooting. I decided to use Phoebe/Amelia model as Miss Minchin but styled her in the Amelia wig as this would be the one used for the final shoots as that way could see how it moved and worked on her head. As I was creating Miss Minchin on Phoebe without the wig i used the Initial Miss Minchin face chart and styling. Having reflected on these image with Phoebe I am pleased with the way she performs in front of the camera although the character of Miss Minchin was not suited to her personally she was comfortable and confidant and worked well with the other actors. I found the makeup was a little to subtle when looking back at the images the contour creese didn't have the desired glamorous feel and the red lip wasn't powerful enough I would like to re visit the face chart for Miss Minchin and create something more powerful while still being glamourous. This may have had an effect of the red wig and possibly using the dirty blonde wig intended for Miss Minchin would have given the makeup more power to jump from rather than getting lost in the hair. I was pleased with the styling particularly the cape creating that broad shouldered, authoritative silhouette was important.
As I had worked with the male model previously i was aware of how i was going to create him into Crewe, the images previously came across too mundane and when finding my other models wanted his to look slightly older to create a distance in age. I took a loan of lace beard's from uni three different colours and sizes and tested them on the male model the day of the shoot. The grey one fitted the best on his face shape so using dry shampoo was essential in blending his own into it, This worked well although couldn't concentrate were it was spraying so would need to remember in the final images to spray the beard first wipe away excess and then apply the basic makeup. During the set up and test lighting the beard was not co operating as shown in the above images so i decided to remove it, this made my actor feel a lot more comfortable, and as i need them to perform this was more important than the visuals of the beard, finding a way to make this more comfortable will be imperative if i want to use prosthetic facial hair in my final shots I could do this by creating a synthetic one from crepe hair stuck directly onto the face allowing the model more movement.

The model for Sara I met on the day, Her face chart used a lot of pinks but in reflection i feel that peachy more orange tones would work better on her face due to her beautifully striking blue eye colour. Also much like Miss Minchin the makeup needed to be a little more exaggerated for the camera adding false lashes i feel will give the eyes the lift they need without looking too done, I will amend this in the final face chart also adding in Lizzie's freckles and exaggerating these as it was an element i really felt brought a personality to the character. The styling worked perfectly and was exactly what i had envisaged as well as the wig although it was a little small on the models head so will do an extra wig fitting previous to wig styling for the final shoots to ensure Lizzie is comfortable and the hair line sits well as it was a little to high as shown in these un edited images. Lizzie was a natural in front of the camera she took direction well and fitted into the character of Sara's perfectly looking cute but with an interesting element about her.

I will amend all referenced made in the reflection of the test shoot with all three actors being sure to develop the designs to both fit the character and the actors. Dates will be sent out in the next coming week to confirm final shoot weeks and get models booked in.

Photography Reflection, This being the first time working with Dionne on an adult shoot i was interested to see how she worked as working with her on the child shoot was a little challenging. I briefed her previous to the actors arrival so we had a clear line of communication as to how the shoot would be organised. It was further help full that she had worked with me on the child shoot as she already knew the kind of atmosphere I am trying to create with my images. I am please with the composition of these final images although the lack of interest in lighting and set really pulls the quality and professionalism of the photography down and the appeal to the target context of theatrical photography. This is an area i need to expand on in more depth and start to visualise onto my blog. I am pleased with Dionne and my communication on set we work well with a good mix of me being able to direct the actors while she takes the photography direction in terms of fitting actors into shot and or compositions. After this test shoot I have decided that I will be using Dionne for my final shoots, as we begin to start testing we are building a relationship that creates a relaxed and fun set this is something i feel is important so the actors feel comfortable to be able to just concentrate on their performance. It also give me a chance to do lighting and other test shoots so we can be clear and organised before stepping onto the final set.

I will be meeting with Dionne again in up coming weeks to test other lighting set ups and set's as this is something we both feel was lacking. We will also be in close communication sharing ideas of atmospheric feelings we want to create.
